Children just starting their school year at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota were gathering for school Mass on August 27, 2025, when a gunman in a horrific act of violence opened fire on the church. Struck by this tragedy, only questions, sorrow, and heartbreak rise – for our nation, our schools and our shared humanity.
Here in the Diocese of Owensboro, the safety of our students, faculties and staff remains a priority. Schools in our diocese have worked closely with local law enforcement to develop a specific safety plan for their location. The Diocese of Owensboro recently hired a Coordinator of Safety and Emergency Operations who conducts regular risk assessments throughout the diocese and assists schools and parishes in mitigating those risks. Protocols and procedures are continually updated, and our school councils remain committed to fostering a secure learning environment. As one body in Christ, we grieve with the Annunciation community. We ask Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, to hold all those suffering in her arms, and pray that her Son, our merciful Jesus, will bring peace and healing.
