Several students from Owensboro Catholic Middle School attended the 2019 Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). During this three day experiential learning conference, students have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of issues, develop critical thinking skills, and engage constructively with their peers from around the Commonwealth. During their time at KYA, students participate in a mock legislative process where they write legislation, network and debate with peers from around the state, and vote on legislation. 

Students from OCMS wrote two pieces of mock legislation: 1) A bill to allow food stamp recipients to remain on the program after becoming employed for two years in hopes of being able to maintain a living wage and 2) A bill to ban surgical abortions. 

The delegation was awarded Premiere Delegation status for achieving a level of esteemed notoriety and accomplishments.  Individual award recipients included Luke Frey as Outstanding Delegate, and Calvin Padgett and Tucker Ray as Outstanding Speakers.  Finally, Major Pride, Spencer Roberts, and Luke Frey saw their bill about food stamp recipients pass both the Senate and House and be signed by the governor.  We are very proud of our KYA delegation for representing OCMS so well!
