For several years, the OCS Elementary Committee has grappled with finding alternative ways to deliver a quality Elementary Basketball program at the same time help to mitigate the growing issue of providing appropriate and necessary amounts of practice slots for the OCMS and OCES basketball programs. The goal always is to provide a program at the elementary level that allows are student athletes to learn the game, hone their basketball skills and have fun.
After much thought and discernment, I have been asked to announce a major change in the Elementary Basketball program. The decision has been made to split the girls and boys basketball seasons – girls in the fall (October to December) and the boys in the winter (December to February). In order to move forward, the process of sign-up and player evaluations for the girls need to occur next week so that teams can be established and practice can begin by the first week of October (prior to Fall Break). Games would tentatively begin on Saturday, October 31 and conclude prior to Christmas break. Sign-up and player evaluations for the boys season would occur in early November. Practice would start shortly after. Games would begin following Christmas break in early January and conclude in mid-February. As dates are finalized, they will be communicated to you via In The Loop, school announcements and flyers to be sent home in your students back-pack.
We are committed to continuing the discussion of how to insure that there is appropriate and necessary amounts of practice slots for all OCMS and OCES teams. As last year, we be will utilizing the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club in October and November for practice. We will continue to explore other options in Greater Owensboro.
