January 2010

I am convinced now more than ever that continued focus on the OCS Mission has provided the foundation for the many successes and accomplishments of our students for the past 20 years. Owensboro Catholic Schools, in partnership with our sponsoring parishes and families, has boldly stood by that Mission, celebrated its unique message, and worked purposefully to make it real day in and day out for our true legacy, the students we serve. Certainly the goal is to allow that Mission to provide the foundational vision that will be realized with a strong and vibrant Owensboro Catholic Schools into the foreseeable future.

To be honest, we very much enjoy being your education partner. Speaking for all members of the OCS team, I thank you for allowing us the privilege and honor of serving you and your children each and every day. We approach the awesome responsibility given us to Build Up the Body of Christ with fervent dedication and prayerful devotion.

We use the word family to describe the OCS experience. It denotes a level of ownership, a personalized approach, and the appreciation of a Christ-centered set of values that provide benchmarks to be realized in all we do. We understand, and more importantly celebrate, the investment you are making to provide your children a quality, Catholic education in that caring, family environment. In crafting the 2010-2011 Budget, we worked diligently to provide an operational budget that would allow us to continue to meet your expectation of providing excellence in faith formation and academics at an affordable cost.

Enclosed is an information sheet that outlines the tuition rates for 2010-2011. Your investment, along with all families who continue to choose OCS as their Catholic education partner, helps to generate over 50% of our revenue need. In order to minimize the impact of any tuition increase, every effort was made to find cost savings and efficiencies in the way we do business. All parts of the budget, both on the revenue and expense sides, were scrutinized and evaluated to produce a cautious, realistic financial road map for 2010-2011. Please note that a year after agreeing to a salary freeze in order to positively impact a tuition increase, the 2010-2011 Budget does provide a very modest salary increase, averaging 2%, for all OCS employees.

As in the past, OCS provides you with various ways to help offset the total investment that you will make to give your children this incredible gift that will last a lifetime and beyond.

• Tuition Assistance: In 2009-2010, over 50% of our families applied for and received a tuition assistance award. Here is an electronic verson of the 2010-2011 Student Aid Form from Private School Aid Service (PSAS). We have budgeted $860,000 to be awarded in need-based tuition assistance. All families who are interested in receiving assistance are encouraged to apply by February 15th to be included in the first round of awarding. Please note that all aid to current families must be awarded by August 1, 2010.

• SCRIP SUCCE$$: The dollars provided through SCRIP SUCCE$$ directly impact you in two ways. Over the past 6 years, SCRIP SUCCE$$ has provided over $700,000 for the operational budget. In 2008-2009, families earned just over $110,000 in tuition rebates used to pay down their 2009-2010 tuition bill by earning 75% of all profits once they earned the required profit goal. Please note that the SCRIP profit goal for 2010-2011 will remain at $175 per Parish Sponsored Family.

• New Family Grant: Any family who does not have a student enrolled in 2009-2010 is eligible to receive a $250 New Family Grant in 2010-2011.

It is my hope that you have noticed the commitment to open lines of communication. In The Loop, on-line Daily Announcements, One Call Now, and Director’s Corners are all examples of tools used to keep you informed. As we move forward in these uncertain economic times, the importance of communication and transparency, the cultivation of new and exciting relationships and the opportunity to find efficiencies gained through integration and symmetry will be key components in our ability to fulfill our Mission and the Mission of the Church.

In closing, I encourage you to help spread the good news about Owensboro Catholic Schools and its tradition of excellence. If you know of a family who would like information contact Karen Gross at 270.686.8896 or via email. Growing our enrollment would definitely have a positive impact on the budget and would serve to minimize tuition increases in the future.

My daily prayer is that our Father God will continue to shower His blessings on the Owensboro Catholic family. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 270.686.8896 or via email if I can help in any way.

God’s peace with you and your family,

Ken R. Rasp
